How Often Should I Meditate?

3 minutes a day is better than 31 minutes once a week.

Did you know, that in as little as 3 minutes you affect your circulation, blood chemistry and electromagnetic field while performing a mantra meditation or kriya? For example, 3 minutes of breath of fire is equivalent of 20 minutes of long deep breathing. Lets be honest, we want the biggest bang for our buck and TIME. We’re all busy and sometimes the ego mind takes over, making excuses as to why we don’t have time to meditate. Again, this is the ego mind talking. Yes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes seems like a long time but 3 minutes? I think our ego can loosen up to that idea. It only takes 3 minutes to completely shift your consciousness and uplift yourself. When we take this time to take care of ourselves, everything else in our lives will take care of themselves! Plugging in our navel center first thing in the morning, again only for 3 minutes- will affect our inner strength, power, outlook and give our body the fresh oxygen it craves.

I’m so passionate about 3 minute meditations because I know how doable they are! First thing before leaving the house:

3 minutes Sat Kriya!

Maybe you try a combination of a few listed above. Dedicate yourself to 3 minutes a day for 40 days to change a habit. Today a friend and I are holding one another accountable for 40 days of Sat Kriya. My experience this morning is what inspired me to write this blog post. I felt so refreshed afterwards, I felt so good about myself and honestly couldn’t stop smiling. I’m excited for these next 39 days, every single one of them. If you’re curious about Sat Kriya here’s an excellent video to learn how and why we do it:

“The greatest reward of doing sadhana is that the person becomes incapable of being defeated. Sadhana is a self-victory, and it is a victory over time and space. Getting up is a victory over time, and doing it is a victory over space. That is what sadhana is. And when you do a sadhana  in the sangat, you enrich yourself in multiple ways.” -Yogi Bhajan

Date Your Best Friend or Don’t Date AT ALL

Simple enough, right? Not so much. Often we find ourselves in relationships (contracts) that either stop and start, go on longer then they ‘should’ or similar relations repeat with different people. Why is this? Because spiritual contacts do not end until our Soul learns and grows from them. So ask yourself next time you’re questioning your involvement with someone, “What is my Soul learning here?” If you’re not sure, what can you do to discover more clarity?

My best friend and I had this conversation the other day and it came up again in an Introduction to Kundalini Yoga Workshop days later. Coincidence? I think not. Often our lower three Chakras become out of balance or even depleted. As householders in society, often shifts take place whether it’s a relationship, job, perspective, whatever! These changes effect the energy in our body and certainly play a role in our behavior. To give further insight of this energy in terms of chakras (energy centers in the body) our root chakra is our foundation- home, boyfriend/husband, etc. Our sacral chakra is our creative energy and sexual emotion. Our Solar Plexus is our power and inner strength from our core. When these lower chakras are out of balance we reach outside ourselves for happiness- i.e., a man/woman particularly someone who’s not necessarily going to grow spiritually with us. SO what do we do?

SAT KRIYA: Not only does Sat Kriya heal and regenerate every organ and cell in your body but it moves the kundalini energy upward along your spine. This Kriya heals mental and psychological imbalances- deep work! Continue reading for directions on how to perform this kriya below.jaya-sat-kriya-sunset

Preparation:

1)     Sit on your heels in Rock Pose (Vajrasana).

(Alternate: Rock Pose is the preferred posture but if you are unable to sit in Rock Pose, you may sit in Easy Pose.)

2)     Stretch your arms above your head so that they are perfectly straight, no bend in the elbows, upper arms hugging your ears.

3)     Interlace your fingers and extend your index fingers, pointing upward.

(Advanced students: If you’re not a drinker or smoker and have never taken drugs, you may try extending all the fingers and placing the palms flat against each other.)

4)     Close the eyes and roll them up to the Brow Point.

5)     Inhale slightly to begin.

The Exercise:

1)     Powerfully chant Sat, squeezing the navel back towards the spine.

2)     Chant Nam as you relax and release the belly (breath will come naturally).

3)     Repeat: Squeezing the navel in on Sat; releasing on Nam.Squeeze, release. Squeeze, release. Keep going at a moderate pace.

To Finish:

1)     Inhale deeply and, with the breath held in, squeeze the Root Lock. Draw the energy up your spine to the top of your head and even to the tips of your fingers. Hold about 8 to 10 seconds. Exhale.

2)     Repeat: Inhale deeply, hold, squeeze, then exhale.

3)     Inhale deeply and then exhale completely out, apply the Root Lock and also the Neck Lock. Hold a few seconds and then release everything.

4)     Lie down on your back in Corpse Pose (arms at sides, palms facing up). Deeply relax for the same amount of time that you did the exercise.

Times:

One minute is good for beginners to get the hang of things. Three minutes is a good starting point for regular practice. Gradually work up to 7, 11, 22, or 31 minutes in one sitting. By the time you reach 31 minutes, you’re in self-mastery territory! And some lucky folks do Sat Kriya for 62 minutes!

A Strong Core Starts Here by ASKinyourface.com

This article was originally published on one of my yoga teacher’s (Allision Kaplan) blog, here!!!

Your core is the very center of your physical, emotional and spiritual universe. Everything about us somehow relates to this real and magical place; where energy, courage, passion and self-confidence generates. The famous psychologist, Carl Jung, once said that Manipura chakra is where we burn through our passions and desires in order to become a completely realized individual. Becoming a fully realized person will take you to the test. Believe me, I know how uncomfortable and scary change can be and that it usually requires us to give up something big (really scary) to make room for something else (much bigger) that often ends up as unexpected amazing.

Keep reading! There’s a great core strengthening workout for you further down the page.

“Fear, uncertainty and discomfort are your compasses toward growth.”

According to the Kundalini yoga tradition, traveling along our energetic highway of chakras, the third chakra, Manipura translates as “city of jewels” or “lustrous gem”. This is exactly what we hold within us. A dazzling, radiant center of energy that distributes life throughout the human framework. Just as the earth would not survive without the sun, we rely on our third chakra to regulate and energize our systems activities. There are many techniques one can use to stimulate, balance and connect more fully to our manipura chakra. According to many traditions, including Kundalini Yoga, the third chakra is the actual place of awakening the kundalini energy; the center of will and action. This is the fire that sets it off! You can read more about this on Spirit Voyage.com. It really is interesting stuff!
So, what is one such way to get this glowing fire going? Simultaneous breath work and simple movement will stimulate the navel center and surrounding area. I’m not saying that the exercises you will hopefully be doing are going to be easy and painless – not at all. You can expect the sensations in your belly and in your head to be intense and challenging. This is how change begins. You gotta feel in order to grow! So, stay with it and you’re going to feel amazing!

Begin creating change by setting aside time for a morning ritual.

First thing in the morning, these exercises, practiced regularly, will shift your energy from slow, sluggish and unmotivated to strong, radiant and ready to roll. Your body, mind and spirit will become brighter, lighter and more powerful than you ever could have imagined.

Before you get started…

A good nights sleep is vital to your whole health so don’t skimp on those precious healing hours of rest. Train yourself to go to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual. This will allow you the time needed to complete your core awakening workout without compromising your nightly rest. Here you go!

Optional Warm-Up

Begin with one to three minutes of Breath of Fire (rhythmic nostril breathing that sounds much like a panting dog) Sit cross-legged with your spine tall and eyes closed. Raise your arms over your head, palms facing away from you and bring your thumbs to touch with your fingers softly curled into your palm. Or, rest your hands (palms up) on your knees. Begin to breathe in and out of your nose. Keep this breathe work going for one minute. Be patient with yourself ; new is strange and uncomfortable but soon becomes an old friend. Don’t rush it; allow the process of daily practice to bring you to this place of comfort and ease.  Click here to watch a great video and learn more about breath of fire.

Maintain awareness of breath while doing the following core exercises for one minute each. Beginners start with 30 seconds for each exercise. End each one minute core exercise with a huge inhale, hold for 3 seconds, followed by a long exhale. These are just a few of my favorites.

Regular Crunch  – with bent knees, feet on the floor: Just lift shoulder blades off the floor and go!

Reverse Crunch – Lift hips off the floor while keeping your torso on the floor

Double Crunch  – Lift BOTH hips & shoulders off the floor simultaneously

Left Crunches  – Take right elbow to the left knee

Right Crunches – Take left elbow to right knee

Straight Leg Raises – Alternately lift & lower your legs (slide your hands under your butt for more support)

Double Leg Raises – Lift & lower both legs together

Bicycle Crunches – Alternate elbows to opposite knee by bicycling the legs

Hold High Plank Pose – on your hands and toes

Hold Plank on your forearms

Allow all this awesome energy to settle while you rest for a few minutes in child pose

15 minutes each morning and you will create a core defined – radiant and powerful forever more. That’s you!

Always love,

Allison

Surround Yourself with Those who Uplift you

yogi_bhajanYogi Bhajan said, “Keep up and you’ll be kept up.” But what if you’re put down? Remove yourself from these toxic energies. I know, I know. It’s much easier said than done- trust me, I learned from experience. But I promise you, when you immerse yourself with other light leaders such as yourself the opposite will fade away from your life. These like-minded will bring ease & joy into your life. You’ll find yourself effortlessly inspired to approach all interactions in life with loving consciousness. The clarity I’m finding by personally surrendering to divine alignment is opening myself up to be a vessel for ancient teachings to speak through me in order to give back to others.

Shakeology is so incredibly healthy, there’s no other single food item out there that can supply you with all the nutrients, vitamins, proteins, and minerals in the amounts you need the way one delicious shake can.

Why Drink Shakeology Every Day? It can help you:

  • Lose weight – especially if you replace a meal with Shakeology every day.

Fearing the word ‘God’

Like many, for years I had a negative connotation associated with the use of the word, “God”. I then discovered the infinite interchangeable words associated with this infinite being. God, to me, is also- Spirit, Divine, Universe, Source, Earth, Mother Nature, Ecstasy, Sat Nam, etc.! Discovering my faith in something higher then myself has been a powerful life-altering and humbling experience. Release all fear of what you might’ve known or have been told. Be honest with yourself NOW and hone in on your heart’s desires and true feelings. Such clearing will align you with the Divine (whether you know it or not).

Wahe Guru,

xoLex

How do you measure success?

Point blank- we all measure success differently. My ego-mind wants to explain success as financial gain, security and stability whereas my heart explains success as having, maintaining and growing a strong connection towards the divine throughout all of life. I truly believe if you lead a spiritual life prosperity will follow. The health, the happiness, even finances will be taken care of. Faith, trust and patience are the only requirements to know all is coming. All is coming.
